DIY Flowers — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I figure out how many buckets to buy?
This is a difficult question. The number of stems you require will depend on the style of arrangements you are intending to create. For example, one person may simply place 5 stems into a bottle for a single arrangement while another may use 30 stems in a larger mouthed vase.
Here is an average number of stems for each potential arrangement.
Bud vase 1-5 stems
Small vase 5-15 stems
Medium vase 10-25 stems
Large vase 15-30 stems
Large arrangement 50-100 stems
Bridal bouquet 40-75 stems
Bridesmaid bouquet 20-40 stems
Flower crown 20-40 stems
Buttonholes/corsages 5-10 stems
Cake flowers 15-40 stems
Chair/aisle arrangement 5-100 stems
Gift bouquets 20-40 stems
Arbor/arch installation 200-500 stems
When and where can I pick up my flowers?
You can collect your flowers from our farm (P51AW92) up to 3 days before your wedding or event.
When should I place my order?
Order your flowers as soon as you can, but no later than a week before your event.
For weddings, please try to enquire no later than a month in advance, although we may be able to accommodate last minute requests.
What should I expect in my bucket or arrangements?
Your bucket will represent the best of the season at the time of your order using the same ratios we consider when making a bouquet. Some possible ingredients are:
25% focal flowers: dahlias, tulips, zinnias, asters, ranunculus, hydrangeas, sunflowers, etc.
50% accent flowers: snapdragons, cosmos, celosia, yarrow, scabiosa, phlox, nigella, stock, rudbeckia, marigolds, strawflower, etc.
25% filler: cress, flax, queen Anne’s lace, eucalyptus, mint etc.
How long will the flowers last?
We will cut your flowers as close to your pick up date as possible which should help them look great for 5-7 days if properly cared for. Many varieties may look good for longer but we would recommend picking up your flowers no earlier than three days prior to ensure their freshness. Note that hotter weather will affect the longevity of your flowers.
How do I take care of my flowers?
Flowers stay freshest in a cool and shady place away from fruit. If you have access to a walk-in cooler, that is ideal. If not, a cool garage or spare room will do. Store in fresh, clean water and check the water level every day.
What supplies will I need to arrange my flowers?
A workspace that is cool and out of direct sunlight
Water for filling vessels
A clean sharp clippers
For wedding bouquets and buttonholes, you may need pins, wire, ribbon, etc.
Can I purchase flowers for a florist to arrange them?
Yes of course. You can buy as many buckets as your florist requires and arrange for you or them to collect them.
Do I need to bring buckets?
No. We will provide buckets but would greatly appreciate their return per instructions post-ordering.
How should I transport my flowers from the farm?
All of our flowers come in clean, black plastic buckets. Any vehicle you use will require air conditioning to keep the flowers fresh for the journey. We do not recommend putting flowers in a car boot or in the open bed of a pickup truck and recommend that you do not drive with the windows far enough down that the wind is blowing on the flowers.
You can generally fit 4-5 buckets in the back seat of a sedan and many more in a van or SUV. IF you need to keep your car seats dry, we recommend laying a tarp or other protection on your seats beforehand, making wide slow turns and being gentle with brake application.
